According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. uses nearly 12 million barrels of oil to produce over 100 billion plastic shopping bags used annually. Petroleum and natural gas are non-renewable resources and prospecting and drilling for them contributes to the destruction of fragile habitats and ecosystems around the world. In a landfill, plastic bags take up to 1,000 years to degrade; as litter, they breakdown into tiny bits, contaminating our soil and water. Hundreds of thousands of animals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food. When swallowed, the thin plastic chokes them or blocks their intestines, leading to an agonizing death.
